10 Things We Will Like Having, We Think
Reading all of the gear related posts on other blogs has inspired us to write one of our own. Not an essentials list, more of a pre-trip what we think we may like list. It will be fun to look back in a few months, or next year, to reevaluate our presumptions. In no particular order, here's what we think will make our life on the road a bit more enjoyable.
Good Cutlery
We just can't justify dragging a complete knife set around the Americas. Most of our culinary duties can be handled with two knives so that's where we decided to start. L.T. Wright Knives gifted us a Coyote skinning knife for paring duties and we bought their Genesis to handle everything else.
Hammock(s)
We picture ourselves napping on some beach or reading in some mountain jungle. No well-respected gringo would go lying about on the ground so we'll be dragging along a single and a double ENO hammock.
Ground Sheet/Beach Blanket (BINGO!)
For those times when we are not respectable gringos.
Games
Uno, Yahtzee, Rummikub, plain old decks of cards, and a Frisbee. It will be exciting times in camp. Keep your ears out for "come on 6s", "UNO, take two!" or "face".
Coffee Press
Yeah, we're "those" people. If our list was numerically ordered this would be numbers 1-5 so shut up about it.
Griddle
We love breakfast food, so much so we have it for dinner sometimes. Other things can be cooked on it too but breakfast, yes please.
Smart Phone
We'll need all the help we can get. "Siri, what torque is required for our front shackle?" "Siri, find a picture of a front shackle!" "Siri, what's the thingy under the van near the front that's not the front shackle?" "Siri?....Siri?....Oh shit we're in trouble!"
MiFi with Amplifier and WiFi Extender
You know the entire world will be anxiously awaiting our next entry. Making sure we have enough money in our account for diesel might really be their usefulness.
Diesel Repair Manual
We're not going to hotdog or spitball it. Hopefully the Power Stroke manual will assist us and said Central American mechanic out. No need for concern that the manual covers truck engines and we have a van, it's just a guideline anyway.
Fly Swatters
Yup, we have two. You can take people out of the country but you'll be damned if you lay one finger on our insect dispatching devices. A bug zapper requires too much power so old school will have to do.
Joking aside, we have hobbled together gear from our days of owning campers and from what we kept when we sold our home. The things we didn't have that might prove to be essential we picked up over the past year. Some gaps were filled in by overlanders we have met. Sarah and Hani of Adventures in Skyhorse gave us some bear spray, bug repellant, SIM cards, etc. Brenton and Shannon of Ruined Adventures gave us several books, a cool cup, and shoulders to cry on...our budget isn't big enough to pack them in the van too.
Without a doubt, we have too much stuff crammed into the van. The amount of clothing and electronics we are taking is absurd. I somehow managed to squeeze in our Dyson hand vacuum, it kept our little house clean so the van should be a nonissue. We will be "gifting" things as we go once we get a handle on what we will really be using.
