Sportsmobile and VW Fling, the Bastard Offspring

Nov 17, 2014
by John

Melding our two minds into a single vision has resulted in a Frankenstein-less monster, the design of the JaMvan living between two worlds. Not the sort that must be sequestered to the damp, unforgiving conditions of life under an 18th century bridge, more like once fashionable tops with flip flops. The realm where most home built things roam, but not far from the island of misfit toys.

Always loving Sportsmobiles, it's no surprise that's exactly what the JaMvan looks like on the exterior. She has gotten a few down votes on color (suck it haters!) but her rugged appearance fits in with all the other ready-to-eat-the-trails overland vehicles. It's hard to soften the appearance of a 4x4 van, why even try, so she'll keep that "if I catch ya I'm gonna eat ya" look.

Rugged and wriggling

Those burly bumpers don't keep her from being a lady though. Her interior couldn't be any more the opposite of her exterior. Still mostly a concept as we get back to building her out, she's nothing less than hippie chic on the inside. VW inspired, our take, complete with flower power headliner. Soft and inviting yet as colorful as the world we see and matching the one we will be setting off to discover.

Hey, that flower power dripped into my seats

A bastard child, she's not a "real" Sportsmobile or VW, but a hybrid much loved. The current culmination of who we are and what we want to be surrounded by. Functional, simple, colorful, not entirely practical...us. As in all things, there's zen to be found. She's our van, our future home, our creation. In our minds, the love child of a Sportsmobile and a VW camper van. Perfect.

I personally really like it, especially the flowers ceiling fabric ! So you're almost ready to go ! That should be exiting. It's remembering when I did the same about one and a half year ago... :-D

Thanks Claude-Alain, that headliner fabric was the start of the entire color palette. Chris told us about your build so hopefully we'll cross paths one day so we can check it out.

166 days at the longest until we start our trip!

I also hope to cross you path somewhere... Good luck for the coming months! :-)

More pictures of the interior! My partner and I are planning to do the same with a van just like yours and I'm dying to see what your interior fitout looks like!

Hey Stacey, we're just now getting back to building out the cargo area. Up next is re-upholstering the pop-top frame then insulating and building the walls. We'll be sure to add blog entries as we go. We have been changing our floor plan again so it's slow going.

Good luck with your build. Feel free to ask us questions and join the Sportsmobile forum --> http://www.sportsmobileforum.com.
