TapouT XT Day Sixty One - Legs & Back

Mar 14, 2013
by Mandi

There are a couple of routines that are like comfort food, Legs & Back being one of them. I think it's because we did this one on day five every week in the first three weeks. It's fairly short, 41 minutes, but it's explosive. Mike keeps the intensity high which is great. Our legs were still sore from Plyo so today required a little extra to get it done. We both forgot to double knot our shoes so we missed most of the tuck ins retying them. That's something I don't like about the leg bands. They roll up, untie your shoes, pull your leg hair, argh. It works though, so we put up with it.

We really pushed each other today. Mandi has been on a mission to burn as many calories as possible so her pace has been blistering. I've decided that every time Mike adds a hop, so will I. Previously, we would do the push ups but we'd always stay on the ground. Today I added the hop at the top and Mandi followed suit. We were both amazed that we could do it. Once again, we need to try each move instead of modifying first.

Overall, today was a great workout for both of us. I swear week eight needs to be re-named to push up week. It's seems like we are doing a ton in each routine, semi-push-ups in Yoga if you count the cobras like I do. I don't mind it but my shoulders and back are starting to complain, Mandi had to ice one of hers tonight. No matter what, this program works so we'll keep putting the DVDs in. For those who are in better shape, or started TapouT XT better off than we did, then weeks like this probably make no difference. To us it's a good upper body pounding that will help us break through to the next level.

Diet Update

I haven't mentioned it in a while so I wanted to reiterate that we are following a primal (paleo) diet. I've gotten a little lackadaisical with our daily log so I don't want anyone to misunderstand our meals. We have cut all grains, legumes and dairy from our diet. Mandi is experimenting with adding a little dairy back in her meals but for the most part we haven't eaten any of the above for over thirty days. In addition we cut all forms of sugar which removed pretty much anything in a jar, can, box, etc. We use nut based flours instead of the traditional ones so our Banana Pecan Muffin below is made from coconut flour. All of our meals are made from scratch so everything takes a good deal of time.

Our ratios of carbs, protein and fat are supposed to be around 25%, 15% and 60%. Each day is different but we strive to eat about 50-60% of our daily intake from fat. This goes against modern convention so this type of diet needs to be researched before attempting. It has worked really well for us, I think it even lowered my uric acid, but we are not doctors so if you decide to implement the same changes then any and all outcomes are your responsibility.

Side effects? Yes, flavors are much more powerful. We had a tiny blood orange the other night and it was one of the sweetest things I have ever eaten. We can also skip meals and not get shaky so we don't have to eat every few hours. We also crave fat, which we need to eat a lot of, so that just goes with the course. Getting to this point was extremely hard. Breaking the refined carb addiction was difficult due to going into withdrawal. We still eat carbs, from vegetables, fruits, nuts... you know, real whole food and not chemically engineered nutritionally depleted food-like products. If at anytime you have a question about our diet or a particular dish just contact us.
